New CMM Taking AIM at Shop Floor Inspection

AIMS Metrology, a Dayton, Ohio-based OEM for coordinate measuring machines (CMM), has announced it has raised the bar for shop-floor CMMs with its introduction of the new Summit 10.10.10.  Engineered with a Renishaw 5-axis REVO-2 dynamic scanning probe and offering a 1 meter cubed measuring capacity the Summit is designed for integration directly into manufacturing.

In 2015 AIMS entered the job-shop space with its Revolution Series HB (Hard Bearing) CMM, providing a 5-axis mobile CMM with Renishaw PH20 touch trigger indexing probe head. Summit is a stationary larger model, providing the a workpiece weight of 2,200 kg while preserving valuable manufacturing floor space. “The Summit is a game changer for manufacturers,” says AIMS Vice President Mark Gearding. “Its’ development was prompted by customer requests for large inspection capacity enhanced with REVO-2’s latest sensors such as RVP vision and SFP2 surface measurement.”

Summit provides a diverse range of industries—including automotive, aerospace and medical companies—the capacity to handle high volume, large parts inspection. The new CMM can be automated with a robot load/unload system or pass through process with a conveyor. The Summit has already been adopted by Honda Transmission Manufacturing of America Inc.

The REVO-2 provides measuring speeds up to 500 mm/second and data collection rates of up to 4,000 points per second for increased part throughput. Rapid calibration for all positions expands uptime. Infinite positioning and 5-axis motion offer easy access to difficult features while flexible tip sensing aids accuracy and flexibility.

Summit incorporates non-wear, zero maintenance, dual linear motors minimizing downtime during the CMM life cycle and resulting in precision positioning and system reliability.

“We first integrated dual linear motors into the design and build of our lab-grade 5-axis LM CMM,” Gearding says. “Our field experience with this type of motor configuration helped us to modify it for the Summit design. These motors provide superior positioning accuracies for REVO technology.”

Summit’s polymer-cast base has built-in vibration resistance and thermal stability for longer life and greater accuracy. The linear bearing machine requires no shop air supply only a 110/220 volt power outlet, eliminating the need for shop air. In addition the Summit CMM can be equipped with automatic tool adjustment to compensate for tool wear in closed loop machining operations.

AIMS designs and produces coordinate measuring machines integrated with Renishaw 5-axis measurement technology for accurate, flexible three-dimensional inspection of in-process and post process parts.  The USA OEM’s line of Revolution Series LM and HB CMMs are engineered for the shop floor, the lab and automated applications in smart factory settings.
